Jesus Christ Is Lord

Armour of God, Part 7 – The Sword of the Spirit

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make know the mystery of the gospel

Ephesians 6:10-19

And take… the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God

Ephesians 6:17

Dictionary definitions

Take - (Greek: ‘dechomai’): to receive: - accept, receive, take (Strong’s Dictionary)

Word – (Greek: ‘rhema’): an utterance (Strong’s Dictionary)

Some Christians look to the Lord to do ‘everything’ for them regarding their success in life. However, this Scripture tells ‘us’ to do something. We need to take, or accept, the sword of the Spirit. That implies, we could refuse to take the sword of the Spirit. Obviously, if we don’t take the sword of the Spirit we will be, limited in our defence and, unable to attack the devil spirits. The sword of the Spirit is the only piece of the Lord’s armour which implies an ability to attack, and do serious damage to, the enemy. As soldiers for the Lord, we should be looking to advance and take new territory (2 Timothy 2:3). The sword of the Spirit is our primary attack weapon!

Using the Word of God as a Weapon

The sword of the Spirit… is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17). This Scripture tells us that the Lord wants us to use His Word like a weapon. We need to learn how to be skilful in spiritual warfare. We need to be discerning and know which part of the Word of God to, select and, use as a weapon. The specific parts of God’s Word which are most useful to use as a weapon are the covenant promises, as they assure us of the release of God’s power.

Word of God is a Living Spiritual Weapon

When thinking about the Word of God as a weapon, it is interesting to note that the Scripture describes itself as living Spirit:

Jesus… said… it is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the Words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit and they are life

John 6:63

The Greek word translated quickeneth is ‘zoopoieo’ and means: to (re) vitalize (literally or figuratively): make alive, give life, quicken (Strong’s Dictionary). Jesus is saying His Words are Spirit and they make alive, they give life. God’s written Words in the bible are living Spirit!

In the letter to the Hebrews we see that the Word of God is described as living:

The Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart

Hebrews 4:12

The Greek word ‘zoe’, translated quick means: to live (Strong’s dictionary). The Greek word ‘energes’, translated powerful means: active, operative: - effectual, powerful (Strong’s dictionary). God’s Word is living, spiritual power which has the ability to penetrate, and affect, the deepest parts of our spirit, soul and body. God’s Word also has supreme, spiritual power to force the retreat of devilish power.

God’s Word is described as bringing healing and deliverance from destruction:

He sent His Word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction

Psalm 107:20

God’s, living Word brings life and health to every part of our body:

My son, attend to my Words… for they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh

Proverbs 4:20, 22

The way we initially use God’s Word as a weapon, to improve our personal lives, is through planting the promises of God’s covenant into our hearts, through the process of personal meditation. Jesus said His kingdom will work when we plant His spiritual seed into our hearts (Mark 4:26). The seed will, over time, spring and grow in our hearts and produce the revelation and faith necessary to receive the power of the Lord’s covenant promises. We need to be diligent and patient during the meditation process as the results are not instantaneous. A vegetable garden does not produce the vegetables on the first day you plant and water the seed. Diligence and patience in needed to cultivate the seed until fruitfulness (Hebrews 6:12). This is one method of using the sword of the Spirit, ministering to our personal lives, through the planting and cultivation of spiritual seed in our hearts.

Spiritual Authority – binding and loosing

A result of this cultivation, of the Lord’s seed in our hearts, is increased revelation and faith in God’s covenant promises. From revelation and faith comes authority. When we have authority, we can step into the arena of spiritual warfare through binding and loosing. This is where we use the sword of the Spirit as an attack weapon. Jesus taught about binding and loosing:

Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven

Matthew 16:17-19

The above verses reveal that once we receive revelation of the Word of God, Jesus Christ, we are empowered to engage in spiritual warfare, which includes binding and loosing (John 1:14). Revelation of God’s Word brings Godly, spiritual authority. We enforce our spiritual authority, in Christ Jesus, through binding and loosing (Matthew 28:18-19, Mark 16:17). The authority, and power, of heaven will back what we bind and loose in the name of Jesus Christ.

Battle against devil spirits

Our battle is against devil spirits, who have been created by the Word of God. God’s Word created all things, including the angels who fell from heaven, who are the devil spirits (John 1:1-3, Luke 10:18, Revelation 12:4, 7-9, Isaiah 14:11-17). The devil spirits know that the Word of God created them, and that they must submit to the higher, and supreme, authority of God’s Word. Jesus has given us the power of attorney to use His name, and His Word, to force the devil spirits into submission (Mark 16:17, Acts 3:16, 4:10). This is what binding and loosing does, which is wielding the sword of the Spirit; it forces the devil spirits to retreat from their evil, destructive activity, and in the place of the devil’s evil power we can bind the liberating power of the Lord to our life.

Binding and loosing, in the name of Jesus Christ, can release people from devilish oppression. I was working with a pastor in a country with few Christians, and many idols, in the land. The pastor’s brother’s wife was suffering great depression, for some months, where she wasn’t able to look after her children properly. It was a great concern to the family. Every day we began to ‘bind to’ her the Scripture your household shall be saved, and also to command every devil spirit of oppression to ‘loose off’ her mind and body (Acts 16:31). We took authority daily, in the spiritual realm, through wielding the sword of the Spirit, even though we were staying in another city. Within a week there was improvement. After three weeks, she was a lot better. Now she is doing fine.

Binding and loosing is similar to speaking to our mountains:

Verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith

Mark 11:23

If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you

Luke 17:6

For the mountain to be removed and cast into the sea, or the sycamine tree to be plucked up and planted into the sea, we need strong faith in our heart; faith that does not doubt (James 1:6-8). To effectively wield the sword of the Spirit we need ‘mountain moving faith’ in God’s covenant promises. Mountain moving faith comes through the planting, and cultivation, of God’s promises in our hearts. It is God’s living Word which produces mountain moving faith, which when released, through wielding the sword of the Spirit, causes the devil spirits to retreat and brings God’s power onto the scene.

The fastest way to becoming skilful with the sword of the Spirit is to become disciplined in the meditation of God’s precious and honourable covenant promises. The growth of God’s covenant promises in our hearts is a foundation upon which we have the genuine faith to exercise spiritual authority.

In any area of our lives where we desire to experience God’s loving will, including the important areas of our health and finances, we must first meditate God’s specific promises in that area. In other words, we need to plant the seed before we can eat of the fruit. We then bind those promises to our lives, and we command the devil spirits to loose-off that specific area of our lives, all in the name of Jesus Christ.

God’s word will always bring effective results, as it is living and eternal:

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever… the Word of the Lord endureth forever

1 Peter 1:23, 25

God’s Word is like the rain which comes down from heaven, which always causes the earth to bring forth and bud (Isaiah 55:8-11). When we release God’s Word through our spoken commands it has impact in the spiritual and natural realms. The Scripture says the angels hearken to God’s Word (Psalm 103:20). When we speak God’s Word into any situation the angels of God will act upon God’s Word, so when we speak God’s promises, angelic power is activated. The Lord will make sure His Word does not return void, as the Lord Himself watches over His Word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12).

When confronting any challenge in life, never be backward is saying it is written. This is how Jesus resisted and overcame the temptation of the devil (Luke 4:4, 8, 12-13). In the face of the sword of the Spirit, wielded by Jesus, the Scripture says, the devil departed from him for a season. We will always be in a battle with devil spirits whilst we are on this earth, however, if we learn to be skilful in the use of the sword of the Spirit the devil spirits will leave us for a season.

The sixth piece of the Lord’s spiritual armour is the sword of the Spirit. We need to take the sword of the Spirit and learn how to become skilful in its use. The Sword to the Spirit is our primary attack weapon, to force the devil spirits to loose-off our lives, the lives of our loved ones, and those who are oppressed by the devil spirits.

The foundation for effective use of the sword of the Spirit is the planting of the Lord’s covenant promises into our hearts through the meditation process. The spiritual seed of God’s covenant promises, which we plant in our hearts, will produce the revelation, faith and authority which is necessary for effective wielding of the sword of the Spirit.

The sword of the Spirit is a powerful spiritual weapon which we are to use to: bind the Lord’s promises and anointing to our lives, loose the power and work of the devil spirits off our lives, and move the mountains, or ungodly circumstances, out of our lives.

Dear Father God, thank you for giving to us your powerful weapon – the sword of the Spirit. We pray your anointing will come upon all of us now, to receive wisdom, strength, revelation, faith and understanding of how to use the sword of the Spirit more effectively.

We pray we will not just use the sword of the Spirit to bless our own lives but, we will rise up to be true and courageous soldiers of the Lord to advance and attack the devil spirits, to liberate those who are held in bondage under the power of the devil spirits. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
