You Must be Born Again!
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said unto him, how can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of flesh is flesh; and that which is born of Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but if incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides forever
1 Peter 1:23
To enter into God’s eternal kingdom every human being needs to be born again. To be born again means to have a spiritual birth, to be born of the Spirit of God (John 3:5-8)
We need to be born of the Spirit as this is the only way our spirit can be cleansed from sin, and made holy. When we are born again we fully identify with Jesus Christ in his death, burial, resurrection and ascension. Our spirit dies with Jesus (Galatians 2:20) and God recreates our spirit as holy and righteous (Ephesians 4:24) . We become a brand, new, spiritual creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) . The spiritual rebirth deals a fatal blow to the problem of our sin, which had alienated us from God (Romans 3:9-12).
Due to Adam’s disobedience to God, sin entered into the world. Sin caused our spirit to be separated from God (Genesis 2:17; 3:24; Romans 5:12). Satan became the god of this world, and the new father of humanity (2 Corinthians 4;4, John 8:44). Satan’s spirit is at work in the spirit of everybody who has not been born again (Ephesians 2:1-3). Humans who are not born again have come under the power and dominion of Satan (Colossians 1:13).
Sinful humanity does not have the ability to rescue themselves from sin, condemnation, and Satan's power because they cannot change their sinful nature (Romans 3:23). External actions, in the form of good works and strong willpower, will not change the fact that their spirit is separated from God and under Satan's power. They need to become a brand new creation to be made holy, and therefore acceptable to God (2 Corinthians 5:17). The new birth makes us spiritually united to God (1 Corinthians 12:13).
When we are born again God’s Spirit comes to indwell our spirit forever (Romans 8:11; 2 Corinthians 6:16). We are reconciled to God and sin no longer separates us from God (2 Corinthians 5:18, 21).
The new birth changes our spiritual nature. Removing us from Satan’s control (Hebrews 2:14-15) and placing us in God’s spiritual kingdom (Ephesians 2:5-6).
Jesus Christ is central to our being born of the Spirit of God. Because God is holy, God cannot commune with or partake of sin (1 Peter 1:16). By definition sin and holiness cannot mix. To be holy is to be separated from sin. Humans who are not born again, however, have a sin nature in their spirit. For sinful humanity to have a spiritual relationship with God it must change and become holy. Many religions try and make humanity holy, but sin is in the spiritual nature of humans who have not been born again. Humans do not have the ability to change their spiritual nature thus making themselves holy. Through the work of Jesus and the new birth God changes the spiritual nature of a person from sin to holiness (1 John 3:9).
When our sin, and sin nature, is removed we have become holy. This was the primary mission of the Lord Jesus Christ to take away the sins of the world (John 1:29; Hebrews 10:12-14; 1 John 3:5-6). When we become born again our spirit is changed. Our spirit is free from sin, enabling us to have a spiritual relationship with God. Our mind, or soul, and body, however, are still tainted with sin. To enjoy the benefits of our new relationship with God, the Christian needs to renew their mind to God’s Word and exercise discipline through controlling sinful lust which is still present in the physical body. When we depart this earth and go to heaven we will be fully freed from the effects of sin in our soul, and in our new immortal body.
Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin-Mary (Matthew 1:18, 20, 23). Jesus was Almighty God in a human body (John 1:1, 14; 1 Timothy 3:16; Isaiah 9:6). God the Son walked on this earth as a man (John 5:18, 22-23).
Jesus offered himself as a sinless offering for the sins of the world. In Jesus’ death on the cross the sins of the world, past, present, and future, were laid upon Jesus. God judged those sins. It was Jesus who bore the wrath of God’s judgement for our sins (Romans 3:25).
It is only in Jesus Christ that the judgement for our sins can be legally satisfied. There is no other man who has ever lived without sin. In God’s system of justice the penalty for sin requires death (Romans 6:23, Hebrews 9:22), or blood. Jesus’ blood, poured out on the Cross of Calvary, was then offered in the heavenly holy of holies to once and for all remove sin from the human race (Hebrews 9:23-28). Only the blood of Jesus Christ can cleanse a man from his sin and make him acceptable to have a relationship with God, because only Jesus’ blood is holy, without sin (Hebrews 9:14). Only through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can a person come into an eternal relationship with God (Acts 4:10-12; Acts 17:30-31).
How to be born again spiritually
God has provided everything we need to make us holy and acceptable, to have an eternal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. All we have to do is exercise faith and give permission, or authorize, our becoming born again. We must believe two things and do one thing to secure our eternal destiny.
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God
If thou shall confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, thou shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation
Firstly, we must believe that the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ is sufficient payment to remit, or remove, our sins. We must accept that God declares a person righteous, or right with Him, when a person has faith in the power of Jesus' blood to remove their sins.
Secondly we must believe in our heart that God has raised Jesus Christ from the dead. We must believe that the man, Jesus of Nazareth, who walked the earth in Israel 2000 years ago, is alive in heaven. Jesus has risen from the dead!
Thirdly we need to confess, or accept, Jesus Christ as the Lord of our life. To be transferred into God’s kingdom we need to surrender our life to the king - Jesus Christ. When we confess Jesus Christ as Lord we are acknowledging his rightful place as God over our lives. Our confession of Jesus as Lord gives God the authority to transfer us from Satan’s power into God’s kingdom. The forgiveness for our sins is appropriated when we accept Jesus.
A Prayer to be Born Again - Pray this prayer out loud
"Dear God, I believe in my heart that Jesus poured out his blood to remit all of my sins, and you raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Jesus, I believe that you are alive right now in heaven and I now confess you as my Lord. Jesus I invite you to be the Lord of my life. I give you authority over my life. Satan I renounce you, and all your ways. Thank you Jesus that I am now in your kingdom. I am born again!"
Praise God you are now a child of God for as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12)
