Dear partners and friends,

I pray we will receive revelation of what it truly means to have a pure and clean heart. Jesus teaches that the condition of our heart is revealed by the words which we speak. Do we speak words which slander and pull people down, and create strife and division? Do we speak words which create doubt and unbelief in what the Lord has promised in His Word? Do we know how to cultivate our heart with the Lord's precious and honourable promises to ensure that our hearts are abundantly filled with the Lord's faith and love? This month's teaching, "A Clean or Defiled Heart", will bring some of the answers to these, and other, questions.

This month we preached the gospel and ministered in many meetings in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand; Manado the capital of Northern Sulawesi, and Makassar the capital of Southern Sulawesi, Indonesia. In various meetings, in Indonesia, more than 50 copies of "The Sword of the Spirit" in the Indonesian language were distributed, 25 came forward to place their trust in Jesus' blood for the remission of their sins and confess Jesus as the Lord of their lives, and one was powerfully baptised with the Holy Spirit. We prayed for many sick people.

With love,

Jesus said… Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man… Do not ye yet understand that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man

Matthew 15:11, 17-20

Some religious people focus on: external actions like types of food which we eat and drink, and observing certain days or feasts etc, as if observance of these things ensures a person is not defiled, made unclean, or polluted. Jesus, however, teaches that observance, or non-observance, of external disciplines, like these, is not the primary source of defilement. Defilement rather comes from our heart!

The human heart is comprised of the spirit and the soul.

Spirit - The spirit is the part of our heart which is recreated in the new birth (2 Corinthians 5:17, 21). Before the new birth the human spirit is dominated by the evil, devilish spirits (John 8:44, Ephesians 2:2-3). In the new birth the human spirit is set free from devilish oppression and placed into the spiritual body, and kingdom, of the Lord Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:13, 1 Corinthians 12:13).

Soul - The human soul is comprised of the mind, will, imagination and emotions. Some non-Christians have a more 'Christian' soul than some Christians, as they are more developed in their thinking in the areas of giving, forgiveness, love, kindness and positive expectation. Once a person is born again the Lord expects them to work on renewing their soul to conform to the Lord's Word (Romans 12:2).

What is in abundance in our heart will eventually come out of our mouth in the form of words (Matthew 12:34). Through our thoughts and words we can be positive or negative. If we slander others, plan murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness and blasphemies, we defile our heart. A key to not becoming defiled, therefore, is to place our primary focus upon disciplining our thoughts and imagination in a positive, godly way, which will ultimately affect our Words. We cleanse ourselves when we meditate the Lord's covenant promises (Ephesians 5:26).

Things which physically go into a man have some importance, but are not as important as what comes out of a man, out of our heart. Many people desire to be pure. The first step to purity is to be born again. When we are born again we get a new holy, righteous, clean, pure spirit (Ephesians 4:24). The second step is to renew our soul - our mind, and fill our heart, with God's Word (Romans 12:2) - especially the covenant promises of the Lord. As our trust is developed in the Lords promises we are enabled to partake in the Lord's divine nature of love, which assists us to avoid selfishness and lust:

Whereby are given to us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world through lust

2 Peter 1:4

The Lord's divine nature is pure, and we partake of that purity as we cultivate the Lord's covenant promises in our hearts.

The Lord's divine nature is also love (1 John 4:8). When we are born again the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us (Romans 5:5). We should always operate in love in all that we do. This is how we know that we are Christians, when we love others (1 John 4:7, 11-13). If we are not operating in love we should examine our heart as to whether we have truly surrendered our lives to Jesus' lordship.

If we deliberately slander and try and destroy the lives of other people, this is not love. This makes our lives unclean. But thank God we have forgiveness and remission of sins. If we have slandered another person and tried to hinder and destroy their life with negative words, we can confess our sins and be cleansed by the blood of Jesus (1 John 1: 7, 9).

Sin and uncleanness initially comes from our heart and is then expressed in sinful actions. This is why we need to keep a close guard over, what goes into our heart and also, what comes out of our heart:

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life

Proverbs 4:23

Our life flows from our heart!

A key to having a clean heart is having personal integrity between our heart and the Lord. Nobody else really knows whether we make internal decisions based on integrity or not. For example, what is the motive behind a certain course of action or enterprise? Integrity would sincerely follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. A corrupt, or defiled, heart may not even seek the Lord as to His direction, or may knowingly choose a course which violates the leading of the Holy Spirit in His heart. A pure heart will take actions based on the leading of God's Holy Spirit, and love; whereas a defiled heart may take actions based on hatred, jealously, revenge or other sinful motives.

The main issues of life are not obeying legalistic rules concerning what we eat or on what day we do certain things. Legalists focus on these things but they have missed the big picture. These things are not what will make a man clean or unclean. What is more important is our heart. Are we judging and condemning our brother, or are we walking in love? Do we have evil thoughts towards our brother, or do we genuinely love and pray for our brother from our heart, and desire his blessing and prosperity? Is our heart clean or unclean? Have we allowed offense and un-forgiveness to embitter our heart so we entertain anger and resentment? Or have we forgiven and forgotten the offense and let go of the bitterness, and rather embrace love and joy?

If we don't have genuine interest in the well being of others, and the interests of the growth and advancement of the Lords kingdom - this is also not love. Love is active, not passive, love acts and does something! It makes a difference, and makes a contribution to improve the lives of the people of this world. Love is not self-centred. Love reaches out to help those who may not have the capacity to help us in return (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).

Jesus' teaching reveals to us that the condition of our heart is revealed more by our words than by obedience to some legalistic rules. People can observe certain rules concerning food and special days but this does not necessarily make them clean. Our words reveal what is abundantly present in our heart. It is our heart which makes us clean or defiled.

The good news is we have the ability to control what is in our heart, thereby increasing our purity. Firstly we need to ensure we have a new, holy spirit. This is achieved by becoming born again through faith in Jesus' shed blood for the remission of our sins, and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Secondly when we abundantly fill our heart, through daily continual meditation, with the Lord's, honourable, covenant promises we partake of the Lord's divine nature which is pure and holy. The promises give us the faith and strength to resist corruption and trust in the Lord for all our needs.

Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for this teaching which helps us focus on what truly makes us clean, which is our heart. Thank you for the work of Jesus which, through the new birth, enables our spirit to be holy and pure. Thank you that we can also engraft your precious promises into our heart, through meditation, which will allow us to partake of your holy, divine nature in our hearts. Please strengthen us to keep a close watch over our heart so that we can reflect your loving, divine nature. We pray this in Jesus Christ name, Amen.
