Welcome

Dear partners and friends,

This month we have been ministering among Pakistani asylum seekers in Bangkok, Thailand. Many of these Pakistanis have fled from Muslim persecution against Christians in many areas within Pakistan. Some have told me they have fled from their families in Pakistan, because their families will kill them because they converted from Islam to Christianity. In Islam, the murdering of one’s family members who convert to another religion is called ‘honour killing’.

During the preaching in Bangkok last Saturday one man testified that pain left his shoulder; as the Scripture says he sent His Word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions (Psalm 107:20).

With love, Andrew

John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world

John 1:29

John the Baptist called Jesus the “lamb of God”. In this study we will look at some of the considerable references to lambs in Scripture, so we can enhance our understanding of the significance of Jesus being the lamb of God.

Abraham

Beginning with Abraham, the father of our faith, God instructed Abraham to offer his only son, Isaac, on a mountain as a burnt offering. We pick up the narrative where Isaac questions his father as to the whereabouts of the lamb for the burnt offering.

Isaac spake unto Abraham his father… behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? And Abraham said, my son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering

Genesis 22:7-8

As Isaac was offered on the same mountain that Jesus was crucified hundreds of years later, this passage is universally understood within Christendom as an Old Testament figure or shadow of, the offering of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary and, Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. The New Testament book of Hebrews interprets the passage in this light; by faith Abraham… offered up Isaac… accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure (Hebrews 11:17, 19). As a blood-covenant partner with God, this act of faith by Abraham enabled God to offer His only son, Jesus, on the Cross of Calvary. The text, in Genesis, says; because you have done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son… in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice (Genesis 22:16, 18). All the nations of the earth being blessed, in Abraham’s seed, is a prophetic reference to the coming of the seed of Abraham – Jesus of Nazareth, and the blessing of the gospel of Christ to all the nations of the earth. Abraham offering his only son is a figure, or shadow, of the Father God offering His only son - Jesus of Nazareth (Hebrews 8:5, 10:1).

Isaac asked his father, where is the lamb? Abraham’s response was prophetic: God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering. Indeed, in the coming of Jesus Christ to the earth God provided Himself as the lamb of God.

The lamb also played a very significant place in the eventual freedom of Israel from slavery in Egypt.

The Passover lamb

The Lord spake… unto all the congregation of Israel… take to them every man a lamb… your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year… kill it in the evening. And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses… the blood shall be to you for a token… when I see the blood I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt

Exodus 10:1, 3, 5-7, 13

The Passover lamb is also an Old Testament figure, or shadow, which gives us deeper understanding of the death of Christ on the Cross of Calvary. The people of Israel were slaves in Egypt and God intervened to bring freedom to Israel. God’s method was to instruct Israel to kill a male lamb without blemish, and to take the blood of the lamb and strike it on the doorposts of the house. When God cast judgement upon Egypt, by killing the firstborn of every house, only those inside the house which had the blood of the lamb on the door posts were safe from judgement. This is a figure and shadow of God’s judgement upon the world, and only those people who are trusting in the blood of the lamb of God, Jesus Christ, are safe from judgement.

After Israel’s exodus from Egypt, God instituted the Law of Moses for the nation of Israel. In the Law of Moses, we also see the killing of lambs as holding a prominent place in the law.

Lamb sacrifice under the Law of Moses

When the Lord established, the priesthood through Aaron and his sons and, the tabernacle where the Lord dwelt; the Lord instructed that a lamb be killed every morning and evening: now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually, the one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; the other lamb thou shalt offer at even… this shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord: where I will meet you, to speak there unto you (Exodus 29:38-39, 42)

He shall bring a lamb for a sin offering

Leviticus 4:32

Under the Law of Moses, it was necessary to kill a lamb every morning and evening, every day, at the place where God dwelt in the tabernacle in Israel. Under the law, lambs were also seen as sin offerings. These daily sacrifices of lambs are also figures and shadows of the true lamb of God, Jesus Christ, who would offer His blood, once, as a sin offering for the sins of the whole world. As the Scripture says:

For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect

Hebrews 10:1

The Law of Moses was a shadow of good things to come. The sacrifices of lambs and other animals could not bring perfection to the people of Israel. The law pointed to a better sacrifice, not the blood of an animal or lamb sacrificed every day, but the single, holy, human, blood sacrifice of the lamb of God - Jesus Christ. From these Old Testament figures and shadows we gain valuable insight into what the prophet, John the Baptist, meant when he said Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

In the light of the Old Testament Scriptures we have studied, and the above Scripture in Hebrews, by calling Jesus the lamb of God, John the Baptist was saying that Jesus was:

  • God’s provision of a lamb which blesses all nations
  • The lamb whose blood will protect us from judgement for our sins
  • The lamb whose blood allows us to communicate and dwell with the Lord
  • The lamb whose blood is an offering for our sin once and for all

Only Jesus can save us

As we study the significance of Jesus being the lamb of God it becomes obvious that, from God’s Scriptural perspective, we absolutely need the lamb of God – Jesus Christ. Without faith in Jesus Christ, and in particular His blood, we are: not blessed, will be judged for our sins, will not have access to the Lord to dwell and communicate with Him, and have no acceptable offering for our sins. In other words, without the lamb of God, Jesus Christ, we are hopelessly condemned.

It is, faith in the blood of the lamb of God, faith in the blood of Jesus Christ that saves us:

Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood… being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him

Romans 3:24-25, 5:9

The New Testament Scripture above makes it clear: we appropriate Jesus’ taking the judgement and wrath of God for our sins, when we exercise faith in Jesus’ blood. Indeed, it is Jesus’ blood, the blood of the lamb, which makes us righteous or justified in God’s sight, and saves us from the judgement of God’s wrath for our sins.

Conclusion

Throughout the Old Testament Scripture, the significance of lambs is revealed in terms of their blood sacrifice to: bring blessing, provide protection from judgement, provide access to God and, be an acceptable sin offering to God. These Old Testament examples are figures and shadows of the true lamb of God, Jesus Christ, who would come from heaven: to bring all of humanity into the blessings of the Lord, to save us from judgement for our sins, to give us a righteous basis for eternal access to God and, to be the acceptable offering to God for all the sins of the whole world for all time. Through faith in the blood of the lamb, Jesus Christ, we are guaranteed of: God’s blessing, not being eternally condemned for our sins, of having access to dwell and communicate with the Lord and, confidence that Jesus’ blood is sufficient payment for our sins.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for this teaching regarding the blood of the lamb, and in particular the blood of Jesus Christ. Thank you for the richness of the Old Testament Scripture which reveals to us the significance of the blood of the lamb through figures and shadows. Thank you that the New Testament clearly reveals that Jesus is the true lamb of God who takes away our sins, and the sins of the whole world. We pray that the truth of Jesus, as the lamb of God, will be revealed to those who don’t yet understand, so they can exercise faith in Jesus Christ the lamb of God, and through faith in Jesus’ blood they will be saved from judgement and eternally blessed by you. We pray this in Jesus Christ name, amen.
