John 19:16-20:22 This is when the first disciples receive the Holy Spirit (Romans 10:9-10).

All born again Christians have the Holy Spirit living inside their spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 2 Corinthians 6:16; Romans 8:9-11).

The born again experience (1 Corinthians 12:13; John 3:5-6)

Acts 1:1-5 Forty days after he breathed on them and they received the Holy Spirit, Jesus says they will be ‘baptised with the Holy Spirit’. This word baptise means to engulf, totally surround. Notice Jesus says the Holy Spirit will come ‘upon’ them (Acts 1:7-8). This is a different emphasis and experience to the Holy Spirit coming ‘within’ them.

As we carefully read through the book of Acts we see the Apostles praying for born again believers to receive the Holy Spirit. This receiving of the Holy Spirit (subsequent to the work of the Holy Spirit in the new birth) is the baptism with the Holy Spirit and is associated with the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit of which the first and most noticeable gift is that of unknown tongues (an ability to pray from our spirit to God, bypassing the intellectual realm).

Acts 2:1-4, 14-47; Acts 8:5-8, 12-17; Acts 9:1-18; Acts 10:44-46 (in this instance the baptism with the Holy Spirit comes at the same time as the born again experience); Acts 11:15-17; 19:1-6.
