We are the Temples of the Lord

Copyright © Andrew J. Shreeve 2014

Much traditional, religious belief is that God is up in heaven, and we are separated from Him, down on earth. But the truth is that, in the New Covenant, the Lord has come to live inside us. The Lord is fully connected to us on the earth… we are not alone!

What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you

1 Corinthians 6:19

God the Holy Spirit lives within us! Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one, so we can say that Jesus is in us.

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one

1 John 5:8

For ye are the temple of the living God; as God has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people

2 Corinthians 6:16

How wonderful it is to never be alone again! To have our friend, the Lord Jesus, living, dwelling and walking with us every minute of every day.

In the Old Covenant the Lord dwelt in the tabernacle, and then later in the temple. The Lord did not indwell people at that time because their spirits where still under the dominion of the devil.

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Among whom also we all had our conversation in time past

Ephesians 2:2-3

I am Jesus… delivering thee… from the Gentiles, unto whom I now send thee, to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God

Acts 26:15, 17-18

It is clear that Jesus considers those who are not Christians (those who have never been born again) as belonging to, the power or the authority of the jurisdiction of, Satan.

The Lord had to make us a holy, new creation before He would live inside us. Because the Lord is holy, He couldn’t, and wouldn't, live inside somebody whose spirit was dominated by the devil.

If any man be in Christ he is a new creature… all things are become new… we might be made the righteousness of God in Him

2 Corinthians 5:17, 21

The new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness

Ephesians 4:24

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son

Colossians 1:13

Through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are associated with Jesus' death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. This means our old spirit (which was under the influence of the devil) has died and is buried with Christ, and we have been reborn with Christ as new creatures - holy and righteous in Christ. Our new spirit is created in Christ and is therefore no longer subject to the power of the devil. Our new spirit has been raised up with Christ and is seated with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). This is the major victory of the work of Jesus on the earth… liberation of our spirits from the devil's power, and translation of our spirits into the Lord's eternal, holy kingdom.

God no longer dwells in the temple in Israel which was made by human hands. When Jesus died the veil of the temple was ripped from the top to the bottom by the Lord.

Jesus, when He had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom

Matthew 27:50-51

In the Old Covenant, the Lord dwelt in the temple behind the veil, and only the high priest could enter that area, only once a year and not without the shedding of blood (Hebrews 9:7). A significance of the Lord ripping the veil from top to bottom was to say that the old system of: the Law of Moses, the Levitical' Priesthood, the temple, and the sacrificial system of animals, was finished. It had served its purpose in leading us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). Now there was a new system where the Lord would indwell people, not a building!

Many Christians, however, still think in terms of the Old Covenant. Even some churches are designed in such a way as to insinuate that the closer you get to the 'alter' of the church the closer you get to God. Linked with this misrepresentation is the idea that only the priest can connect you to God (in some cases through the communion, mass, or the Lord's Supper). So some Christians get the erroneous idea that the Lord is still removed from them, and if they go to the church building they can get closer to God.

This idea of the separation of Christians from the Lord also makes many think, "if we are 'good enough' maybe we can communicate directly with God." But the scripture declares that we are 'good enough' because we are a new creation in Christ. This is achieved simply through faith in Jesus' blood and acceptance of Jesus as our Lord. We now have bold access to the Lord!

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which He hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, His flesh… let us draw near with a true heart.

Hebrews 10:19-20, 22

We can now communicate with the Lord because He has chosen to live inside us, because He has made us acceptable to Him through the new birth. Even with our weaknesses, failures, and mistakes, the Lord does not leave us.

Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,… lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

Matthew 28:18. 20

I really appreciate that about Jesus. He never leaves us even when we make mistakes… He is faithful and true (Revelation 19:11)! The truth of the New Covenant is that we carry Jesus with us everywhere we go. We now live and move with Jesus our Lord!

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that He is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in the temples made with hands… though He be not far from every one of us: for in Him we live, and move, and have our being… for we are also His offspring

Acts 17:24, 27-28

Conclusion

We need to get rid of the idea that the Lord is way up in heaven somehow removed from us, or that the Lord dwells in the 'sanctuary' of the church and we cannot really access that place. Rather, we need to develop the mindset that the Lord dwells in us and walks with us everywhere we go. The new creation has enabled this profound miracle of the Lord, the creator of heaven and earth, now dwelling inside human beings.

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature

Galatians 6:15

If we are a born again Christian we are a new creature in Christ. Jesus, our Creator, now lives within us for all eternity.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that through the new birth you now indwell us. You have become closer than a brother. Thank you that you are faithful and true and you will never leave us. Even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, or into dark and sinful places you are indwelling us… we have become the temples of the Lord! We bless and worship you, in Jesus Christ name, Amen.
