Letting God lead us

The Spirit of God has a wonderful plan for our lives!

I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an unexpected end

Jeremiah 29:11

God’s plan for us is ‘shalom’ peace! Shalom includes health, prosperity, peace, rest, safety, to be well and happy (Strong’s Dictionary). God is not planning our destruction. That’s not how God thinks. What loving Father would plan destruction and pain for his children? Isn’t it strange how some religions, which claim to represent God, believe God will lead someone into destruction? No, God is not in the business of destroying lives but rather redeeming lives from destruction. Jesus said:

the thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly

John 10:10

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgives all thine iniquities; who heals all thy diseases; who redeems thy life from destruction; who crowns thee with loving kindness and tender mercies; who satisfies thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles

Psalm 103:2-5

This is a major reason why Jesus came from heaven to earth. Jesus was cursed so we could be free from the curse and subsequently blessed!

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us

Galatians 3:13

Praise God! We do not have to live under the curse any more. Jesus has redeemed us! He has bought us back from the power of Satan and placed us in his eternal kingdom where there is an abundance of shalom!

Who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son

Colossians 1:13

It is vitally important we understand the love and goodness of God. This is the foundational understanding we need before we are willing to entrust the leadership of our lives to him. None of us want to deliberately experience pain and suffering. We need to reassure ourselves that God is good and loving. If you will give him the opportunity he will bring you into a place of shalom, a place of great peace and rest where you will be restored spirit, soul, and body.

O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him…there is no want to them that fear him…they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing

Psalm 34:8-10

So how do we venture out into the unknown with God? We have to learn a new way of making decisions. Instead of being ruled by our mental reasoning we must submit our mind to the leadership of God’s Spirit. Only as we follow the Spirit of God will he be able to lead us into that place of peace and love.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts

Isaiah 55:8-9

God’s perspective is vastly different from ours. God has existed from eternity and has watched 6,000 years of human existence since he created Adam from the dust of the earth (Genesis 2:7). God knows the future as He is outside of our time frame. How could we think that our thoughts were equal with God? No, God’s thoughts are far superior. A wise man will humble himself and defer his decisions and ways to God.

The bible says David was a man after God’s own heart, which shall fulfil all my will (Acts 13:22). When David faced any major decisions or challenges he inquired of the Lord.

Therefore David inquired of the Lord, saying, shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the Lord said unto David… then David inquired of the Lord again. And the Lord said unto him

1 Samuel 23:2, 4

This is a beautiful insight into David’s relationship with God. David did not operate out of his own wisdom but rather asked God direct questions and God gave David direct answers. How much more can we, who have the added benefit of God’s Spirit living inside our born again spirit, enjoy direct communication with God?

The Apostle Paul is another example of submitting his will to the Spirit of God.

Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia

Acts 16:6

Paul did not just preach the gospel where he thought it was needed or would be a good idea. Where Paul preached was governed by the Holy Spirit.

After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not

Acts 16:7

Evidently Paul lived his busy life dependant on the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Paul discerned the will of God’s Spirit concerning where he would preach the gospel. Finally Paul discerned, or assuredly gathered, that the Lord had called them to preach in Macedonia (Acts 16:10).

If Paul and David can hear from God so can you! God will give you specific instructions and strategies concerning decisions in your life. God says that His children are led by His Spirit (Romans 8:14). Determine in your heart today that your life is entrusted to the loving leadership of God’s Spirit and Word. Give God the reigns of your heart and He will lead you into shalom. He will lead you into His great peace, love, joy, health, and abundant prosperity.
