Love - The True Foundation

(copyright Andrew Shreeve 2003)

We can loose focus of what is the most important priority in life. Sometimes we can find ourselves off balance. What is the most important priority in life? The bible is very clear concerning what is most important - love! When we understand love, and lay it as our primary foundation, other things fall nicely into place. When we neglect to give love its pre-eminent place we fall prey to misguided priorities like, judgment, un-forgiveness, criticism, negative thinking, worry, fear, selfishness, survival… the list could go on. Why is love so important for our wellbeing?

Firstly, God Himself is described as love:

God is love

1John 3:8

If God is love then love has to be supreme, for God is the creator of all things.

There is no fear in love

1 John 3:18

What a wonderful statement! Love and fear cannot co-exist. Eradicate fear from your life by exercising love.

Faith works by love

Galatians 5:6

The very foundation of faith is love and without faith we cannot please God (Hebrews 11:6). Without love we cannot have true faith.

The first and great commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all you soul, and with all your mind

Matthew 22:37-38

Love for God is our first priority in life. Our second priority is like it. James teaches the royal law of scripture:

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself

James 2:8

Love for the people in this world is the royal law of scripture. We cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of humanity.

Often we look for miracles and power as a priority. These things are good, yet in the midst of teaching about the powerful gifts of the Holy Spirit the apostle Paul says:

And yet shew I unto you a more excellent way

1 Corinthians 12:31

Paul goes on to expound in chapter thirteen about love. Study this chapter as it defines biblical love! It tells us the attitude God has towards us and the attitude we should have towards others. Paul concludes in verse thirteen,

And now abideth faith, hope, charity (love), these three; but the greatest of these is charity (love).

Love is extolled as the most excellent way. Love is the very essence of God. Let love be your sure foundation this year. Interpret everything through the eyes of love and you will find correct balance. Let love be your motivating force in all your activities. Let love guide your understanding of who God is and what His plan is for your life. Let love give you the courage to step out of your comfort zone to help others, to give beyond your natural capacity. Let love be your response towards every person in your world. Walk in love and your will walk with God, for God is love.
