Are those who have never Heard the Gospel Saved or Damned ?

copyright © Andrew Shreeve 2004

Have you ever heard the following rationalization? If God is a loving God, he would not send someone to hell who has never heard the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ? If the above statement is true the following issues are raised:

  • If people can be saved without believing in Jesus Christ then Jesus death on the cross was unnecessary and Jesus died in vain.
  • We had better not preach the gospel to those who have never heard because, they may be ignorant but, they are saved. If we preach they have suddenly become condemned if they do not believe. We are then bringing a message of condemnation, rather than salvation.
  • We are presuming God has the ability to legally save a person from the consequence of their sins by some other method, than faith in the shed blood of his Son Jesus Christ (Romans 3:25).
  • If we are mistaken and, in fact, those who have never heard are damned then Satan has successfully deceived God’s people from fulfilling the most loving action of preaching the message of salvation to the lost.

My dear friends, the truth from God’s Word, the bible, is very clear. Every human being who is old enough to know right from wrong is a sinner (Romans 3:9-18, 23). No person is without excuse for their sin (Romans 1:19-20). God’s law is written in the heart and conscience of every person (Romans 2:14-15) whether they have heard God’s written law or not.

For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law

(Romans 2:12)

Some say Romans 7:9 teaches that people who have not heard the law are alive to God and therefore saved. The is a misunderstanding as the apostle Paul goes to considerable effort in the early chapters (1-3) of his letter to the Romans to lay as a foundation truth that all people, whether they are Jew or Gentile, are sinners and need to be saved. Romans 7:9 needs to be understood in the light of this clear foundational truth.

Jesus also makes it very clear that every person on earth needs to be saved.

Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3)

Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God (John 3:5)

Marvel not that I said unto thee, ye must be born again (John 3:7)

Jesus, in John 3:14, then quotes from Numbers 21:4-9. This is the story of the people of Israel who had rebelled against God. The people were judged by God and bitten by the serpent. The people were dying and their only hope of life was to look to the serpent of brass which Moses lifted up. Jesus teaches that in like manner he, the Son of Man, must be lifted up that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:15).

My friend, this world has been bitten by the serpent! People are dying! People are condemned already (John 3:18). People are under the power of the god of this world Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4, Ephesians 2:2-3). There is a desperate urgency to bring the good news, the Gospel of life and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. People need to be saved! If people do not hear the gospel they will spend eternity in the lake of fire (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9, Revelation 21:8)!

Who is responsible to send out preachers of the gospel? Is it God’s responsibility? No it is the responsibility of Christians (Romans 10:12-15). Jesus has done his part. Now we have to do our part. Jesus gave us the command (Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-20, Luke 24:47, John 20:21-23). We must make every possible sacrifice!

As I look out across the great city of Bangkok, Thailand with conservatively 10,000,000 people. 99% do not know of Jesus. Most have never heard the gospel. That is 9,900,000 beautiful precious people condemned in their sin and on the road to an eternal destiny in the lake of fire. This is not even mentioning all the other people in the world imprisoned in false religions of Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Roman Catholicism, Communism, Humanism, and Ancestral Worship (there are many more Satanic’ inspired deceptions). Can you imagine the seriousness of this situation? This demands immediate response. Ask God what you can do. Your involvement is desperately needed whether it is intercessory prayer, financial contribution, helping your local church, utilizing your skills and gifts to help get the good news out, or going in person to preach God’s Word to the lost.

It is time for the church of the Lord Jesus Christ to rise up! To awaken to the call of the blood (Acts 20:26-27) of those who have never heard the glorious gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Start today, even if it is small. Put your shoulder to the plough and let us love God and love our neighbour as ourself. I know it is in your heart and I encourage you to not hold back (Isaiah 54:2-3). You will be richly blessed! I love you and God loves you. Andrew
