Jesus’ Missionary Vision

Copyright © Andrew J. Shreeve 2016

One of the reasons Jesus came to earth was to establish His missionary vision for humanity. Jesus’ vision is that through the shedding of His blood on the Cross of Calvary, and His subsequent resurrection from the dead, anybody who believes in Him and surrenders to His Lordship can be reconciled back to God, with the promise of eternal life (2 Corinthians 5:18). Jesus’ vision is to establish every person on the earth into His kingdom, and to then bless them with His loving power.

God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth

1 Timothy 2:3-4

Jesus’ vision is that all humans be saved, both in this life and for eternity. The Greek word “sozo”, translated saved, in the above verse, has the meaning of: safe, delivered, protected, healed, preserved, do well, and make whole (Strong’s Dictionary). Jesus’ vision for each one of us is good health, financial prosperity, safety, protection, peace in our heart, and eternal security.

Jesus is God

Critical to experiencing Jesus’ vision is to understand that Jesus pre-existed before His incarnation. The man Jesus of Nazareth is the incarnation of our creator God!

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… all things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made… and the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us

John 1:1, 3, 14

He that came down from heaven, even the Son of Man… he that cometh from above is above all… he that cometh from heaven is above all

John 3:13, 31

God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory

1 Timothy 3:16

It is clear from Scripture that Jesus is our Creator God, that He came down from heaven, died for our sins, rose from the dead, and was received back up into heaven.

Faith in Jesus’ pure, holy blood

The reason that we need to understand that Jesus is God is because, for our sins to be remitted, Jesus’ blood needed to be holy and pure. Only God is without sin, and only God incarnate could live a sinless life and have holy, pure blood.

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood… being now justified by His blood

Romans 3:25, 5:9

Without shedding of blood is no remission

Hebrews 9:22

Scripture affirms that the basis of the remission of our sins is faith in His blood, and in particular the holy, pure blood of the God-man Jesus of Nazareth.

Surrender to Jesus Lordship

Also critical to experiencing Jesus’ vision for our life is the surrendering of our lives to the resurrected Lord Jesus.

If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved

Romans 10:9

We cannot enter Jesus’ kingdom without inviting Jesus to be the Lord over our lives. We must give the Lordship of our lives to the risen Lord Jesus. This is a total surrender of our will to defer to the will of the risen Lord Jesus.

But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name

John 1:12

When we receive the Lord Jesus we become born again as a son of God (John 3:5). We receive a new righteous and holy spirit and belong to Jesus’ kingdom (Ephesians 4:24). In Jesus’ kingdom there is supernatural power. The power of Jesus’ kingdom can be received into our lives through faith in God’s written promises in the bible (Hebrews 6:12, 2 Corinthians 1:20). In Jesus’ kingdom there is supernatural power for everything we will ever need in this life (2 Peter 1:3).

Jesus’ vision is that we access His power to assist our lives to be free from poverty, sickness, disease, fear, devils, danger, anxiety and worry. Jesus wants us to experience freedom in every realm of our lives (John 8:31-32, Matthew 11:28-30, Luke 4:18-19).

Shalom

Jesus’ vision is summed up by the Hebrew word ‘shalom’. Shalom means: well, health, prosperity, peace, rest, safe, all is well (Strong’s Dictionary); health, completeness, tranquillity, at ease, unconcerned, unhurt and whole (Vine’s Dictionary). We know ‘shalom’ is Jesus’ vision because the prophet Isaiah says Jesus is the Prince of Shalom!

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given… his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of ‘Shalom’. Of the increase of His government and ‘shalom’ there shall be no end… the zeal of the Lord of Hosts shall perform this

Isaiah 9:6-7

Jesus is the Prince of ‘Shalom’, the Prince of healing, prosperity, safety, and tranquillity. Jesus has a wonderful vision for our lives, a vison of shalom! Jesus is zealous to fulfil His vison which is to increase shalom by bringing shalom to every person on the earth.

The preaching and teaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ is an integral part of the method of bringing to fulfilment Jesus’ vision, to bring shalom to every person on the earth.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth ‘shalom’

Isaiah 52:7

The apostle Paul quotes from this verse in Isaiah 52:7 when explaining the revelation which the Lord Jesus gave him concerning the true gospel of Jesus Christ (Galatians 1:12):

As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of ‘shalom’, and bring glad tidings of good things

Romans 10:15

The gospel of Jesus Christ is ‘shalom’. It is the good tidings that through faith in Jesus Christ every human on the planet has access to the power of God. Through faith in the written promises in the bible we can receive forgiveness and remission of sins, eternal life, health and healing, prosperity, safety, rest, completeness and tranquillity!

Purpose for Life

Life has true meaning and purpose when we work with Jesus to fulfil His vision. What can be more important than to work with our Creator, Jesus, to implement His vision for the inhabitants of this earth?

Jesus has commissioned everyone in His kingdom to be involved in the preaching of this wonderful gospel to every person on the earth, and to demonstrate the power of Jesus’ kingdom (Mark 16:15-20, Matthew 28:18-20).

Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature… these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues… they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover… teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you

Mark 16:15, 17-18, Matthew 28:20

Jesus taught His disciples to proclaim Jesus’ eternal kingdom, to cast our devils, to heal the sick, and to bring His healing shalom to peoples’ lives. We should do the same!

Conclusion

Jesus’ vision for this world is that every person enters His kingdom and experiences ‘shalom’. In other words, that every person be born again and enter into His eternal, spiritual kingdom, to be saved from hell; and that every person be healed, prosperous, safe, at ease, in tranquillity and at peace.

Our main purpose in life is to work with Jesus, our Creator, to bring His loving and beautiful vision to fulfilment.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for Jesus’ wonderful vision and mission to love every human being through bringing the power of His kingdom to their lives. Please open the eyes of our understanding to see Jesus’ vision for this world. Help us also to know the part we should play to assist Jesus to realize His loving vision. We pray this in Jesus Christ name, amen.
