The New Human Spirit

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil

1 John 3:9-10

The above verses are talking about the new human spirit, the born again spirit (John 3:3, 5-7). This is a critical area of understanding for the Christian as it affects the way we view ourselves and those around us (Proverbs 23:7). Understanding that our new spirit is free from sin influences our ability to walk by faith (Romans 10:17) and boldly follow the directives of the Holy Spirit.

Some Christian teachers quote a scripture from the Old Testament, the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked, who can know it (Jeremiah 17:9). They teach that this scripture describes the condition of the heart of every person. This is, however, only partially true as the heart comprises the spirit and soul. The spirit of the born again Christian has been remade holy (Ephesians 4:24). This is an extremely important distinction between the Old and New Testaments. The application of Jeremiah 17:9 must properly understand the three parts of the makeup of humans (1 Thessalonians 5:23) and the fact that the spirit of a Christian is made new, by God, in the new birth (Ezekiel 36:26)

During the present church age the Holy Spirit dwells in born again Christian believers (Romans 8:9). Before this time, during the time of Jeremiah, all humans had a deceitful and desperately wicked heart. The Holy Spirit did not dwell in anybody. The human heart was dominated by Satan, and still is for those who are not yet born again (Ephesians 2:1-3). Humans were in bondage to sin and Satan. Jesus, however, came to free us from this bondage, to free our heart from deceit and wickedness. The Lord Jesus died, rose again, and broke the power of Satan over the human race (Hebrews 2:14-15). Jesus made the way for a new race of humans called the children of God (Romans 8:16). The children of God receive the nature of God inside their heart (Romans 5:5). They are given a newly created human spirit. In the new birth humans become a fit dwelling place for the Spirit of the Lord to reside (1 Corinthians 6:19).

When we were born again God translated us from the power of Satan into a new spiritual kingdom, the kingdom of his dear Son, Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:13). It is in our spirit that this miracle has occurred. The born again human spirit is now connected to the Lord Jesus. We are now part of the body of Christ with Jesus as the head (1 Corinthians 12:13, Ephesians 2:6)). The life of Jesus now flows into our human spirit. Our human spirit is no longer dominated by the devil. Our human spirit is free to flow in the power and love of the Lord. Sin no longer emanates from our spirit. This is the meaning of whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin (1 John 3:9). This verse is referring to our new spirit. It is our new spirit which is born of God. The reason our new spirit does not emanate sin is because the seed of God remains in our new spirit. Our new spirit is impregnated or born of the seed of God (1 Peter 1:23). We are a new species of being (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are born of God. We are the children of God. We have a new father (Romans 8:14-15). Our Father is holy and we, like our Father, are holy! We are a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9). This is the miracle of the new birth, being born again of the Spirit of God. In fact the bible says we cannot sin (1 John 3:9)! The new spirit cannot sin as it is born of God. We have been recreated superior to Adam before the fall (Romans 5:17). The work of God through Christ in making us a new creation is greater than the work of Satan in causing Adam and the human race to fall. Much more is the work of Christ in the new creation. Hallelujah! What a tremendous victory Christ has achieved for humanity by dealing a fatal blow to the sinful, satanic, nature which had plagued humanity for 4000 years.

The present strategy of Satan is to hide this glorious revelation (Mark 4:15). Satan is attempting to deceive Christians into not understanding the extent and power of the new creation. Satan wants to hold Christians in a sin consciousness of doubt and failure. If Satan can convince Christians their heart is still deceitful and desperately wicked they will never learn to trust in their new spirit (Mark 11:23) and never learn to operate out of their spirit where dwells all the wisdom and power of God (1 Corinthians 1:30).

This teaching is emphasising the present redemption of the new human spirit. I would also like to briefly mention the other aspects of our human being, namely our soul (thought and emotional realm) and our bodies. These other two parts of our humanity were not recreated in the new birth. They basically remain the same as before we were born again. If they were polluted, deceitful, wicked, and trained in sinful behaviour before the new birth then they will need work done on them to bring them into line with the new holy, righteous, spirit which we have become in the new birth (Ephesians 4:24).

This is why the bible teaches us to present our bodies as holy to God and renew or renovate our mind (Romans 12:1-2). If we want to enjoy the full power and glory of the new creation we will need to retrain our minds to think in accordance and unity with the Word of the God. Otherwise our minds may block the leading, anointing, and flow of God which proceeds from our spirit. An un-renewed mind can overrule the flow of our spirit and we can walk as ‘mere earthly men’ no differently from those who are not born again.

In addition to renewing our soul with the Word of God we also need to control our bodies. Our bodies still potentially have sinful lustful tendencies which may dominate us during a weak moment if we do not continually discipline ourselves to walk in the spirit (Galatians 5:16, 19-21).

Keeping in mind the three aspects of our humanity (spirit, soul, and body), the way to experience victorious Christian living is to focus on strengthening and building up our spirit, through receiving the Word of God into our spirit through our soul. We become victorious through making our spirit dominant over our soul and body. In addition, learning to flow from our spirit as it yields to the Holy Spirit causes us to experience God’s victory.

The way we strengthen our spirit is twofold. Firstly, we feed our spirit with the milk and meat of the Word of God (2 Peter 2:2, Hebrews 5:12-14). God’s Word is Spirit (John 6:63) and God’s Spirit Word needs to be planted into our human spirit (Mark 4:26). Through daily meditation of the Word of God we feed, nourish, and water our spirit (Matthew 4:4) so that our spirit can grow strong. Through meditation we exercise our will to submit to God’s Word and therefore renew our soul. The second way we strengthen our spirit is to edify and build up our spirit through praying in unknown tongues (1 Corinthians 14:4). The exercise of this wonderful spiritual gift enables our spirit to communicate to God and also receive the infusion of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4). Jesus said out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given (John 7:38-39). Praying and yielding our spirit to the Holy Spirit through praying in unknown tongues causes us to flow in the supernatural. This supernatural exchange of spiritual prayer with the Lord causes edification and a building up of our spirit (Jude 1:20). It edifies and fine tunes us to the Lord, helps us discern his inward witness (Romans 8:16), and gives us the spiritual discernment necessary to walk in his perfect will (1 Corinthians 2:9-10, 14).

So let’s remind ourselves that we are a new creation, created by God in holiness and righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:17, 21). Our new spirit is not wicked, deceitful, and unreliable. Rather it is trustworthy and dependable, created by God in Christ Jesus. Sin is no longer emanating from our new human spirit. Let’s strengthen and edify our spirits today by receiving God’s Word through meditation and praying in unknown tongues. Let’s learn to operate and flow from our spirit, thereby dominating our mind and body with their limited perspectives and potentially sinful inclinations. Let’s walk as the new species of being which we have become in Christ Jesus and enjoy the abundant, God kind of life!

I love you, Andrew
