Separated from Sin

It is vital we understand what the Lord Jesus has accomplished for us with regard to our relationship to sin.

The bible says the Christian is dead to sin (Romans 6:2). John writes: whoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God (1 John 3:9).

So what does it mean: we are dead to sin, we cannot sin, and we do not commit sin? 1 John 1:8 appears as though contradicting these other Scriptures by saying, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

To rightly divide these Scriptures we must look at the finished work of Christ, and the spirit, soul, and body of a human (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Firstly, what has Christ done for us through His death, resurrection, and ascension to the throne of God? Christ has represented humanity in this work as the Son of Man, and has enabled anybody, who wills to exercise faith, to participate in His work.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me

Galatians 2:20

We are buried with him by baptism into death

Romans 6:4

Has quickened us together with Christ

Ephesians 2:5

Hath raised us up together

Ephesians 2:6

And made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus

Ephesians 2:6

You can see from the above five underlined Scriptures we are identified, or linked, with the crucifixion, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Christ.

But we must discern which part of us has become identified with this work of Christ: spirit, soul, body, or our whole being? I think we can easily ascertain that it is our spirit which has been changed, as our body and soul did not die when we accepted Christ. It is our spirit which died with Christ, was buried with Christ, and which has been born again and raised with Christ to the right hand of God the Father, on His throne. And it is our spirit which is now dead to sin. It is our spirit which cannot sin because it is born of God, and contains the seed of God. It is our spirit which has been baptised into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). It is our spirit which is sealed with the Holy Spirit, in Christ (1 Corinthians 1:22, Ephesians 1:13, 4:30).

So why is it important to know that our spirit is sealed and separated from sin? It is important because this is our true and eternal identity, and as we see ourselves so we will act (Proverbs 23:7). Our new identity in Christ is holiness and righteousness (Ephesians 4:24). We must see ourselves in the light of the finished work of Christ. We must learn to live by faith in what God’s Word says about us. God’s grace, or ability, manifests when we walk by faith in His Word. The first step to having victory and walking free from sin is seeing ourselves separated from sin, in Christ.

We are however aware that we still sin from our mind, which needs renewing (Romans 12:2), and our flesh, which lusts against our spirit (Galatians 5:17). Whilst we are on this earth we will continually battle against sin in our soul and body. However, rather than accepting defeat we must embrace the finished work of Christ in our spirit, and learn to live from out of our spirit, by faith.

The power of love in our spirit (Romans 5:5) is greater than the imperfections in our soul and body. As we learn to walk from our spirit in love we will experience significant growth and freedom from sin in our soul and flesh realms.

So the next time you are tempted to sin say to yourself, “My spirit is dead to sin, I have been separated from sin and am a new holy creation in Christ. I have the power and love of Christ in me. I choose to walk in love. I will now act in a way that is in the best long-term interests of every individual I meet, and every group of people my actions influence. I walk in the victory and liberation of Christ! I am free from sin.”

Be blessed as you enjoy freedom from sin.

Love, Andrew
