Developing our Faith Shield

Copyright © Andrew J. Shreeve 2014

Paul writes in his letter to the Ephesians saying we are in a spiritual battle against, wicked spirits or, devils:

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places

Ephesians 6:12

Paul goes onto say that that the devils are shooting fiery darts at us:

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked

Ephesians 6:16

The fiery darts can include sickness and disease. We know this because oppression of the devil was healed by Jesus. The Greek word translated healing, in the following verse, has the meaning of: cure, heal, make whole (Strong's Dictionary). The oppression of the devil includes the need for curing, healing and restoring to wholeness.

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil

Acts 10:38

Some sickness and disease comes from devils

The above Scripture attributes, at least some, sickness and disease as oppression from the devil. In addition, when we study Jesus' healing miracles He sometimes brought healing to people through the casting out of devils.

They brought unto Him a dumb man possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake

Matthew 9:32-33

In this verse we see that dumbness can be caused by devils.

There was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him, and said unto her, woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And He laid His hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God… ought not this woman being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day

Luke 13:11-13, 16

In these verses we see that Jesus specifically singles out Satan as the one who bound the woman's body so she was bowed and could not stand up straight. As devils have the power to, at least, bring dumbness and bondage to our physical bodies we need to be properly armoured to be adequately protected from these fiery darts of the devils. Devils also have the potential to attack us with a larger array of sicknesses and diseases than these two examples.

Devil's attack in the financial realm

As the devils are committed to hindering the establishment of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, devils also attack us in the area of our finances, as financial provision is an element of the spiritual promises within the gospel of Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:19, Matthew 6:33, Psalm 23:1). Jesus said the thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy (John 10:10). Devils use their power and influence to attempt to steal our financial inheritance and hinder us from receiving the financial promises of the Lord. In fact, the devils don't like us to receive any promise which the Lord has made eligible to His body; and try and use deception, distraction, and pressure of various kinds, to keep us from receiving the Lord's powerful blessings (Mark 4:15, 17, 19).

Devil's attack in the mental realm including the imagination

In 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 the Scripture discusses using weapons in spiritual warfare. The area of battle, in this Scripture, is in the thoughts and imaginations of our hearts. This is an area where the devils will also target their fiery darts in an attempt to get our minds to imagine our lives differently from what the Lord has promised in the Scriptures. If the devil can capture our mind, imagination, and will, we will not be able to receive the Lord's blessings, as the Lord will not violate our free will. In addition, if we don't think in accordance with the Lord's covenant promises we will not be in faith for specific promises; and it is faith which draws the Lord's power into our lives (Hebrews 6:12).

Developing our Faith shield

The shield which protects us from the devils fiery darts is the faith shield. To live more successfully on the earth, we should therefore ask the question: how do I develop and raise my faith shield?

Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God

Romans 10:17

Faith comes from the Scriptures. So to develop our faith shield we need to receive and establish Scriptures in our heart. But which particular Scriptures develop our faith shield to adequately protect us from the devils attacks and fiery darts?

The nature of faith, which works, is faith that is without doubt (James 1:6). The Scriptures which we need to establish in our hearts, to remove doubt and develop faith, are Scriptures which promises us victory; or in the case of protection from sickness and disease, Scriptures which promise us healing; or in the case of protection from financial lack, Scriptures which promise us financial provision. The covenant promises of the Lord, therefore, are the Scriptures which we need to establish in our hearts to develop our faith shield.

The best time to develop our faith shield is when we are healthy, strong, and prosperous; not when everything is going wrong. It is easier to develop our belief for healing when we are healthy. The most difficult time to believe for healing is when we are sick and our body is screaming at us that healing is not for us. As the old saying goes; "we need to dig the well before we thirst!"

The nature of the faith shield is that it is developed from the Word of God, which is seed (Mark 4:14). Seed has to be planted to produce its fruit; so our faith shield is like a protective tree which we need to plant, cultivate, and grow to maturity (Psalm 1:3). Developing our faith shield is a process and takes time (Mark 4:27-28). It is better, therefore, to begin developing our faith shield as soon as possible so that we can travel through life with less chance of getting hit by the fiery darts of the devils.

Our faith shield is like preventative medicine or exercising the right habits of: good diet, adequate exercise and sleep, having a positive mental attitude, drinking little wine and, not smoking. In the natural we have a better chance of enjoying good health if we do the right things in the natural. The same is true in the spiritual realm. When we develop our faith shield we are doing the right things in the spiritual realm, and improving our chances of protecting ourselves from the spiritual attacks of the devils. If we have a strongly developed faith shield in the area of healing we may not even see many of the sicknesses and diseases which plague other people's lives. If our faith shield is well developed, the enemy will be powerless to reach us with his attacks.

There are millions of evil spirits, or devils (Luke 10:18, Revelation 5:11, 12:9), who can potentially shoot fiery darts at us in an attempt to destroy our lives, and cause us not to experience the loving power of the Lord's, blessed, covenant promises. The Lord has provided us protection from these fiery darts of the devils, when we make the effort to develop and build our faith shield. We develop our faith shield through establishing our heart (spirit, mind, will, imagination, and emotions) in agreement, and unity, with the Lord's covenant promises. Daily meditation of the Lord's promises is the method of establishing our heart. When our faith shield is developed we enjoy victory in life, and may not even experience the many devilish catastrophes which plague many people's lives.

Dear Lord, thank you for your deep love for us. Thank you, you have provided us with access to your spiritual armour, which we can wear, to protect us from the fiery darts of the devils. Please enlighten us to be aware of the fiery darts of the devils. Please also strengthen us to be able to do the necessary daily meditation to develop our faith shield. Thank you that your faith-shield enables us to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked; and therefore experience your blessed 'shalom' blessings in this life. We love and bless you in Jesus Christ name, amen.
