The Sword of the Spirit

  • What is the sword of the Spirit?

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armour of God… we wrestle… against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day… take… the sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God

Ephesians 6:10-13, 17

We need to view our wrestling in the light of: Ephesians 1:3, 19 – 2:1, 5-6; Colossians 1:13, 2:15, 3:1; Hebrews 2:14; Luke 10:20; and Mark 16:17. We wrestle from a position of strength and authority in Christ.

Even though we are blessed in Christ, we still need to enforce our authority, as the devil is a thief and will steal everything we allow him to steal (John 10:10). We enforce our spiritual authority over the devil spirits through exercising the sword of the Spirit.

The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God:

The Word of God is quick, (live) and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart

Hebrews 4:12

The Word of God is living Spirit:

The Word of God which liveth and abideth forever... the Word of the Lord endureth forever

1 Peter 1:23, 25

It is the spirit that quickeneth (makes alive); the flesh profiteth nothing: the Words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life

John 6:63

God’s Word is living Spirit and is the most powerful force in the world. The living Word of God, the written Scriptures, have the creative power to change circumstances. The sword of the Spirit is a living, powerful, spiritual weapon which can: force the devil spirits and ungodly circumstances to retreat and, activate God’s power (Jeremiah 1:12, Psalm 103:20).

  • Using the sword of the Spirit in spiritual warfare

Jesus used the written Word of God, or Scripture, against the devil:

The devil said unto him… and Jesus answered him, it is written… and the devil said unto him… and Jesus answered and said unto him, get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written… and he (the devil) … said unto him… for it is written… and Jesus answering said unto him, it is said, … the devil departed from him for a season

Luke 4:3-4, 6, 8-10, 12-13

In this exchange between the devil and Jesus, we see Jesus kept His discipline and focus, and used the sword of the Spirit in every exchange with the devil. In the third exchange the devil got a bit smarter and also used the sword of the Spirit, but Jesus countered the devil again with the sword of the Spirit through a right division of the Scripture.

Don’t be afraid or intimidated to say it is written. For example, if you are sick and people ask, “how are you?” It is perfectly legitimate to answer by saying “it is written, the Lord heals all my diseases (Psalm 103:3), it is written by His stripes I was healed (1 Peter 2:24), and it is written Jesus took my infirmities and bare my sicknesses (Matthew 8:17). The Lord is healing my body, thank you for asking.” Now, you may receive some persecution for using the sword of the Spirit in this manner but:

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof

Proverbs 18:21

I would rather enjoy good health and suffer persecution from people who don’t understand the principles of spiritual warfare, than suffer sickness and disease and be pitied by those same people.

In 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 spiritual warfare is described in terms of pulling down and replacing thoughts and imaginations in our mind. We use the sword of the Spirit to cast down imaginations in our mind which oppose God’s promises. We use the sword of the Spirit to cultivate new thoughts and imaginations in our heart which are in agreement and obedience to God’s revealed will in the biblical, covenant promises. The method of engaging in this spiritual warfare is biblical meditation of God’s covenant promises, which is using the sword of the Spirit (Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1:2, Romans 12:2).

  • Principles of the Kingdom of God

Keep in mind the Word of God created all things including the devil – the fallen angels (John 1:1-3, 14, Colossians 1:16).

The devil spirits know that the Word of God is their Creator, and that they are subject to the Word of the Lord. Their greatest fear is the Word of God, and a son of God who knows how to use the sword of the Spirit against them.

In Mark 4:26 Jesus says the kingdom of God operates when men plant spiritual seed in their hearts. We plant seed in our heart through using the sword of the Spirit in personal meditation, and in others hearts through evangelism, teaching and preaching.

  • Defensive and offensive usage of the sword of the Spirit

The devil spirits are proactively attacking us, as they are shooting fiery darts at us (Ephesians 6:16). When we meditate the Scriptural’ promises we are using the sword of the Spirit, as we are speaking the Word of the Lord out loud. This use of the sword of the Spirit develops our faith shield, which can potentially protect us from all the attacks of the devil spirits.

The kingdom of God operates through the planting of spiritual seed in our hearts (Mark 4:26). The seed grows and produces faith (Romans 10:17). It is the faith, which is produced from the seed, which draws the Lord’s power into our lives (Hebrews 6:12). In the case of God’s promises, the power remains with us because the seed is living and active and continues to produce fruit (like a natural tree). So, through using the Sword of the Spirit in meditation we develop our faith shield, which continually defends and protects us from spiritual attacks of the devil spirits.

There are many God-given dreams and goals we would like to achieve in our lives. To achieve these goals, including building the kingdom of God, we will need to expand our vision, resources, finances, strength and power (Isaiah 54:2-3, Mark 16:15, Matthew 28:19). We will most likely need additional supernatural power, resources, grace, and favour from the Lord to achieve these dreams and goals. To expand, we will need to go on the offensive!

The apostles said unto the Lord, increase our faith. And the Lord said, if ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you

Luke 17:5-6

To increase our faith, and thus increase the power of the Lord operating in our lives, we need to understand that our faith operates like a seed. For a seed to produce it must be planted, and watered daily. It must be protected and nourished until is bears fruit – so it is with our faith.

We plant our faith by speaking God’s promises to our circumstances. We water and cultivate our faith by continuing to speak God’s promises to our circumstances, until our circumstances conform to God’s promises. This process of speaking God’s promises repeatedly to our ungodly circumstances, has the effect of increasing our faith. When our faith is genuinely strong enough the circumstances with change, and the mountains will move (Mark 11:22-23). The tree, the mountain, or the circumstances will obey our faith-filled words! This is how we use the sword of the Spirit in an offensive way to: change circumstances in our lives to conform to God’s Word and, to realize our God given dreams and goals.

  • Why do we need to learn how to use the sword of the Spirit?

The Lord has richly blessed us, but the devil does not want us the walk in the fullness of our blessings (Ephesians 1:3, 18-19, John 10:10). If the devil can keep us defeated in our lives through poverty, and sickness and disease, then all our energy and focus is diverted to our survival. The worldly people will also see that our lives do not line up with the promises in the bible, so why should they believe what we say? Why should they follow us to Jesus if we are unable to appropriate the blessings which are promised to us in the bible? If, on the other hand, our lives experience the victory which is promised in the Scripture we can speak with greater authority and confidence, and people will be more open to follow us to the Lord and get saved. Therefore, people’s eternal destiny is partially dependent upon our ability to successfully use the sword of the Spirit and win our own spiritual battles (1 Timothy 2:4).

In addition, if we can successfully walk in the liberty which Jesus has provided for us we will be empowered and freed to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit (not to be a slave to some man, or job, we don’t like for survival sake (1 Corinthians 7:21, 23)). This will also result in more people being saved as we will be in our perfect, blessed vocation in the Lord.

Obviously, it is better to be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might and to be able to successfully stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:10-11). Through using the sword of the Spirit effectively we can exert strong power in the spirit realm which will bring godly blessings into our lives, family, nation and world.

The sword of the Spirit is a spiritual weapon which we can learn to skilfully use to successfully stand against the attacks of the devil spirits. These attacks of the devil spirits include: sickness, disease, poverty, fear, worry, and anxiety. The weapon is also used to bring God’s power to advance our God-given dreams and goals.

The sword of the Spirit is the written Word of the Lord, which is the Scripture of both the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible. When we speak the covenant promises of the Lord out loud we are wielding the sword of the Spirit. This is the method of planting and cultivating spiritual seed in our heart which develops our faith shield, which protects us from the attacks of the devil spirits. This increase of faith in our heart draws God’s power into our lives, assisting the fulfilment of our God-given dreams and goals.

Dear Lord, thank you for this teaching on the sword of the Spirit. Thank you that you have given us your spiritual weapons to, assist our lives in being protected from the attacks of the devil spirits and, advance our God-given dreams and goals. Please strengthen us, and give us wisdom, to use the sword of the Spirit on a daily basis to bring our lives more into your perfect will. We pray this in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
